How to get to Railay
Longtail boats leave constantly from Ao Nang Beach (about 15 minutes, 100–150 THB per person when shared) and from Krabi Town pier near the night market (around 30 minutes). There's no road in — the same limestone cliffs that make Railay dramatic also keep it boat-only, which is the whole point. Boats stop running around 6pm, so if you're not staying overnight, plan your return before dusk. In rough weather (roughly June–October) crossings can be delayed or paused for an hour or two; it's rarely cancelled outright, just slower.
Railay West vs Railay East vs Phra Nang Beach
Railay West is the postcard beach: soft white sand, calm turquoise water, sunset views over the Andaman Sea, and most of the resorts. Railay East, a five-minute walk across the peninsula, is muddier and lined with mangroves rather than sand — but it's where the budget guesthouses, bars and the pier for boats to Ao Nang are, so most travellers end up passing through both sides daily. Phra Nang Beach, a further ten-minute walk south, is arguably the best of the three: a limestone cave shrine at one end, dramatic cliffs on both sides, and (rumour has it) the clearest water on the peninsula.

There are no ATMs on Railay East or West — bring enough cash, or use the one ATM near the Railay East pier, which regularly runs out during high season.
Rock climbing at Railay
Railay is one of Southeast Asia's best-known rock-climbing spots, with well-bolted limestone routes right above the beach, including multi-pitch climbs with sea views. Several climbing schools on Railay East run half-day and full-day intro courses for complete beginners — no experience needed, and gear is provided.
Best time to visit Railay
November to April brings the calmest seas and driest weather. December and January are busiest and priciest; late April to early June, right before the rains build, is a good shoulder-season window with thinner crowds and lower resort rates.
