🛶 Mangrove bay

Ao Thalane Mangrove Kayaking

A calm, self-paddled alternative to Krabi's island tours — gliding through mangrove tunnels and limestone canyons about 25 minutes from Ao Nang, with monkeys, kingfishers and hidden lagoons along the way.

What the tour is like

Half-day trips (roughly 4-4.5 hours including hotel pickup) put you in a two-person kayak and send you paddling across open bay before entering the mangrove channels proper — shaded, narrow waterways winding between limestone cliffs and root systems. No experience is needed; guides give a short briefing and paddle alongside, and some operators offer a "paddled for you" option if you'd rather just take in the scenery.

What you'll see

Crab-eating macaques (often right at the water's edge, sometimes swimming across in front of kayaks), kingfishers, herons, and mudskippers are the regular wildlife sightings, all set against towering karst walls. Several tours also stop at a small cave or a freshwater swimming pool inland, depending on the operator and tide.

Tide matters

At low tide, some channels become too shallow to paddle and require briefly getting out to push the kayak through mud — not a problem, but worth expecting rather than being surprised by. Morning tours generally catch better water levels.

Cost and booking

Half-day tours run roughly 900-1,200 THB per person including hotel pickup from Ao Nang, Krabi Town, Klong Muang or Tubkaek; sunset and full-day (kayaking plus ATV) options are also commonly offered. Private tours cost more but allow a slower pace and flexible timing.

Who it suits

A good half-day add-on for travellers who've already done an island boat tour and want a completely different kind of scenery — quiet, green, and enclosed rather than open sea. Suitable for most fitness levels and older kids; not ideal for infants or anyone with mobility concerns given the getting-in-and-out-of-kayaks involved.
