If you only have one day
The 4 Island Tour is the sensible default — short boat rides, four genuinely different stops, and it's the easiest to book last-minute through any Ao Nang tour desk. It's also, unavoidably, the busiest option, since every operator runs broadly the same route on the same morning schedule.
If you want fewer crowds
The Hong Islands cover similar turquoise-water, limestone-cliff scenery on a slightly longer boat ride, which alone thins out the crowds compared to the standard 4-island route. A private longtail charter on either route pushes this further — you set the timing rather than following the standard 9am wave of boats.
If you have a full day to spare
Phi Phi and Maya Bay look genuinely different from anything closer to Krabi — sheer cliffs rising straight from the sea rather than flatter island beaches — and are worth the longer crossing if you have a spare full day. Bamboo Island, reached via Phi Phi, rewards the extra travel time with some of the clearest, quietest snorkelling water in the group.
Combining trips
Multi-island tours combining Phi Phi with Bamboo Island in a single day are common and worth asking for specifically if snorkelling is a priority — it saves a separate trip and typically adds only an hour or so to the day.
